Addressing Inequities in Healthcare
CaroMont Health is dedicated to identifying and reducing healthcare disparities in our community. Each year, aggregate data is reviewed to identify disparities in race, ethnicity, spoken language, gender, insurance coverage, location and other factors that may affect access, utilization, diagnoses and treatment. This data is based on self-identified demographic data that is collected from patients or their legal guardian during registration. While recognizing and correcting health disparities is a complex process, CaroMont Health is dedicated to ensuring all patients receive equitable access to care and services.
In 2023, after identifying a 16% discrepancy in colorectal screening between Medicaid versus Medicare beneficiaries, our healthcare system improved colorectal cancer screening for the Medicaid population by more than 11%.
In 2024, the community health disparity project focused on providing education and information within the African American community to support early identification of stroke and drive down the time from symptom onset to arrival at the hospital. This helped ensure that patients who could benefit from the administration of thrombolytics (a clot-busting medication) received care within the specified timeframe (3 to 4.5 hours). This focuses education improved the disparity for African Americans receiving thrombolytic therapy by 3%, as compared to the Caucasian population.
In 2025, CaroMont Health identified a 25% disparity in breast cancer screening mammogram completion between Medicaid and Medicare beneficiaries. In response, we enhanced protocols and streamlined processes, resulting in a 22% improvement in breast cancer screening and mammogram compliance.
As we move into 2026, CaroMont Health will continue to focus on exclusive breastfeeding for newborns at hospital discharge for Medicaid beneficiaries.
