Much like healthcare, education has the unique ability to enrich and support students and their communities. Through partnerships with Belmont Abbey College, Gaston College and Gaston County Schools, the CaroMont Health Foundation is working to strengthen our community, now and into the future. 

Application Details

General Scholarship Program

The CaroMont Health Foundation General Scholarship Program consists of eight funds awarded annually. Applications open the first week of January and are due by the end of February. Awards typically range from $1,000 to $3,000, depending on merit, need and funding availability. Applicants are evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • GPA of 3.0 or higher (unweighted)
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Evidence of student leadership and community service
  • Passion for healthcare
  • Residency in the CaroMont Health service area, or relation to a CaroMont Health employee

The application window for FY27 is now closed. The next scholarship cycle, FY28, will open in January.

General Scholarship Funds

Amanda George Self Emergency Medicine Scholarship

Since 2018, this scholarship has honored the memory of Amanda George Self, a talented Nurse Manager in the Emergency Department at CaroMont Regional Medical Center, by supporting students pursuing a career in emergency medicine.

Additional Criteria: Pursuing a career in emergency medicine

CaroMont Health Auxiliary Gertrude Clinton Health Career Scholarship

Established by the Gaston Memorial Hospital Auxiliary in 1971 and later renamed in memory of founding member Gertrude Clinton, this scholarship supports students pursuing an education in health-related programs.

Additional Criteria: Pursuing a health-related degree

Dr. Marty D’Amore Scholarship

In memory of Dr. Marty D'Amore and his courageous battle with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), this scholarship has supported students pursuing radiology sciences since 2015.

Additional Criteria: Pursuing radiology sciences

Gene and Jo Woody Family Scholarship

This scholarship memorializes the legacy of Dr. Gene Woody, dentist, and Mrs. Jo Woody, registered nurse and Red Cross volunteer, who had long-standing careers and dedication to volunteerism in healthcare fields. Established in 2023, this scholarship supports students pursuing an education in a healthcare-related field who exemplify what Dr. and Mrs. Woody stood for.

Additional Criteria: Pursuing a healthcare-related degree

George Washington Hall Scholarship

This scholarship pays tribute to Mr. George Washington Hall, a long-time resident of CaroMont Health's rehabilitation center, Courtland Terrace. It has been awarded since 2023 to current Courtland Terrace employees who exemplify the center's dedication to serving patients in need of long- or short-term rehabilitation, assisted living, skilled nursing and memory care services. In exchange for this assistance, recipients commit to remaining a full-time Courtland Terrace employee for one year.

Additional Criteria: Courtland Terrace employee, promissory note required

Lonnie & Rachel Waggoner Nursing Scholarship

Established in 2005 to honor the professional and community service contributions of Dr. Lonnie Waggoner and Mrs. Rachel Waggoner, this scholarship is awarded to individuals seeking an accredited nursing degree.

Additional Criteria: Pursuing a nursing degree

Mr. & Mrs. Joe R. Hudson Scholarship

Since 1974, the Mr. and Mrs. Joe R. Hudson Scholarship has supported students seeking an education in nursing. In exchange for this assistance, recipients commit to accepting a role with CaroMont Health and remaining a full-time employee for one year.

Additional Criteria: Pursuing a nursing degree, promissory note required

Team CaroMont Scholarship

Funded by and for employees since 2015, the Team CaroMont Scholarship supports CaroMont Health employees furthering their education through degree and select non-degree programs.

Additional Criteria: CaroMont Health employee

Newly Revised Wayne F. Shovelin Scholarship

The 2026 Wayne F. Shovelin Scholarship awards multiple students in healthcare programs who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership and community service.
