Supporting Students on Their Healthcare Journey
For many students, a career in healthcare begins in a classroom, supported by mentors, scholarships and a community invested in their success. CaroMont Health Foundation is proud to invest in the next generation of nurses, physicians and healthcare professionals through 10 scholarship funds awarded annually to students across Gaston County and the CaroMont Health service area. From the Cares Scholarship to the Wayne F. Shovelin Scholarship, each fund reflects our commitment to strengthening the region's healthcare workforce for years to come.

Application Details
Scholarships Program
The CaroMont Health Foundation Scholarships Program awards multiple scholarships annually to students pursuing healthcare careers. Applications open the first week of January and close at the end of February. Awards range from $1,000 to $3,000 based on merit, need and funding availability. Students may reapply each year they're enrolled.
Applicants are evaluated on:
- GPA of 3.0 or higher (unweighted) and financial need
- Student leadership, community service and passion for healthcare
- Residency in the CaroMont Health service area, or employee relation
Scholarship Funds
The CaroMont Health Foundation offers 10 scholarship funds in total. Eight are included in one combined application. The Wayne F. Shovelin Scholarship Fund and the Cares Scholarship have separate application processes.
Amanda George Self Emergency Medicine Scholarship
Established in 2018 in memory of Amanda George Self, a nurse manager in the Emergency Department at CaroMont Regional Medical Center, this scholarship supports students pursuing careers in emergency medicine.
Additional Criteria: Pursuing a career in emergency medicine
CaroMont Health Auxiliary Gertrude Clinton Health Career Scholarship
Established by the Gaston Memorial Hospital Auxiliary in 1971 and later renamed in memory of founding member Gertrude Clinton, this scholarship supports students pursuing an education in health-related programs.
Additional Criteria: Pursuing a health-related degree
Dr. Marty D’Amore Scholarship
Established in 2015 in memory of Dr. Marty D'Amore and his courageous battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), this scholarship supports students pursuing an education in the radiologic sciences.
Additional Criteria: Pursuing radiology sciences
Gene and Jo Woody Family Scholarship
Established in 2023, this scholarship honors Dr. Gene Woody, a dentist, and Mrs. Jo Woody, a registered nurse and Red Cross volunteer, whose long careers in healthcare were matched by a lifelong commitment to volunteer service. It supports students pursuing a healthcare-related education who share that commitment to serving others.
Additional Criteria: Pursuing a healthcare-related degree
George Washington Hall Scholarship
Established in 2023, this scholarship honors Mr. George Washington Hall, a long-time resident of Courtland Terrace, CaroMont Health's skilled nursing facility. It is awarded to Courtland Terrace employees who exemplify the center's dedication to patients receiving short- and long-term rehabilitation, assisted living, skilled nursing and memory care.
Additional Criteria: Courtland Terrace employee, promissory note required
Lonnie & Rachel Waggoner Nursing Scholarship
Established in 2005 to honor the professional and community service of Dr. Lonnie Waggoner and Mrs. Rachel Waggoner, this scholarship supports students pursuing an accredited nursing degree.
Additional Criteria: Pursuing a nursing degree
Mr. & Mrs. Joe R. Hudson Scholarship
Established in 1974, this scholarship supports students pursuing an education in nursing. Recipients agree to accept a position with CaroMont Health and remain a full-time employee for one year following graduation.
Additional Criteria: Pursuing a nursing degree, promissory note required
Team CaroMont Scholarship
Established in 2015 and funded by CaroMont Health employees, this scholarship supports CaroMont employees furthering their education through degree and select non-degree programs.

Featured Campaign Fund
Cares Scholarship
Made possible by the CaroMont Health Cares Campaign, a $15 million commitment to strengthening our region's healthcare workforce, the Cares Scholarship supports students pursuing licenses, certifications and healthcare degrees, creating a direct path into healthcare careers. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis for students enrolled in partner programs at Gaston College and Cleveland Community College, including Nursing (ADN), Radiologic Technology, Medical Assisting and Sonography.
Applicants are evaluated on:
- GPA of 3.0 or higher (unweighted)
- Demonstrated financial need
- Enrollment in a partner program
- Passion for healthcare
