Frequently Asked Questions

A breast cancer diagnosis brings a lot of questions. We've answered the most common ones here, and if you don't find what you're looking for, your dedicated nurse navigator is just a call away.

What does NAPBC accreditation mean for my care?

NAPBC accreditation means CaroMont Health's Breast Program has been independently evaluated and found to meet or exceed nationally established standards for breast cancer care. Accredited programs demonstrate superior outcomes across diagnosis, treatment, support services and follow-up. Choosing an accredited center gives you confidence that your care meets the highest benchmarks in the country.

Do I need a referral to see a breast surgeon?

In many cases, a referral from your primary care physician or OB-GYN is the starting point. However, self-referrals are often accepted. Contact our scheduling team at (704) 834-2000 to discuss your specific situation, and our breast navigators can help guide the process from the very first call.

What is a breast nurse navigator, and how can they help me?

A breast nurse navigator is a registered nurse with specialized training in breast cancer care who serves as your dedicated point of contact throughout your care journey. They help coordinate appointments, explain your diagnosis and treatment options, connect you with support services, advocate for you within the care team and ensure you never feel lost or alone in the process.

What is the difference between a lumpectomy and a mastectomy?

A lumpectomy removes only the tumor and a margin of surrounding tissue, preserving most of the breast — typically followed by radiation therapy. A mastectomy involves removing the entire breast (or both breasts). The right choice depends on tumor size, location, genetics, personal preferences and other clinical factors. Our surgical team will walk you through the benefits and considerations of each option so you can make an informed, confident decision.

Is breast reconstruction done at CaroMont Health?

Yes. CaroMont Health's breast surgery team works closely with our plastic surgery specialists to offer a full range of reconstructive options following mastectomy. This includes implant-based reconstruction and autologous (using your own tissue) approaches. Reconstruction can often be performed at the same time as mastectomy (immediate reconstruction) or at a later date, depending on your overall treatment plan.

What is the High-Risk Breast Program, and who should consider it?

The High-Risk Breast Program is designed for individuals who may have an elevated lifetime risk of developing breast cancer — due to family history, prior biopsies showing atypical cells or known genetic mutations such as BRCA1/BRCA2. If you're concerned about your risk, our breast navigator can refer you to a breast physician specialist who will conduct a thorough risk evaluation and recommend a personalized screening and/or prevention plan.

What is DigiCap technology and how does it help patients?

DigiCap is a FDA-cleared scalp cooling system that can significantly reduce chemotherapy-induced hair loss. During infusion therapy, the device circulates a cold liquid through a cap worn on the head, reducing blood flow to the scalp and limiting the effects of chemotherapy on hair follicles. It is available to eligible patients receiving chemotherapy as part of their breast cancer treatment at CaroMont Health.

How do I access genetic testing?

Genetic testing for hereditary breast cancer genes (such as BRCA1 and BRCA2) is available through our program. Your breast surgeon or oncologist can order testing, and our genetic counselors will explain what the results mean for you and your family. Testing may be covered by insurance for individuals who meet certain clinical criteria.
